We are seeking an Ophthalmologist with specialty in Glaucoma Surgery in the scenic & sunny - Southern Arizona, Tucson- VA Health Care System.
Position Description:
The SAVAHCS is actively looking for an ophthalmologist with specialty in glaucoma surgery to join our team of comprehensive and subspecialist ophthalmologists in sunny Southern Arizona. The clinic will primarily manage tertiary care glaucoma mixed with comprehensive ophthalmology mentoring of residents from the University of Arizona Ophthalmology Residency. This is an excellent opportunity to perform the latest MIGS (Hydrus, iStent, Xen, Micropulse, KDB) as well as other incisional glaucoma surgery with experienced eye nurses in the operating room in your own OR time as well as training residents. Responsibilities to include clinical care, resident supervision, and training in both the outpatient and operating room settings.

Job Duties:
Providing comprehensive clinical and surgical ophthalmological care to our Veteran patients.
Providing diagnostic and therapeutic services in inpatient and outpatient settings, ordering diagnostic studies and procedures, and perform surgical and non-surgical general ophthalmology procedures.
Supervising ophthalmology residents in the eye clinic, short procedure room, laser room and the operating room.
Initiating changes in the system for delivering care based on evidence-based medicine research and /or studies.
Assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating educational programs.
Effectively and creatively teaching and providing guidance to others involved in the delivery of the educational program.
The Ophthalmologist should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 4 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), some bending from the neck and lower back and some light lifting may be involved.
Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System (SAVAHCS)
The Tucson VA Medical Center is a 295-bed hospital that provides training, primary care, and sub-specialty health care in numerous medical areas for eligible Veterans. It is the "Flagship" for the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS), which serves over 170,000 veterans located in eight counties in Southern Arizona comprised of the medical center in Tucson, Arizona and seven Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Casa Grande, Green Valley, Safford, Sierra Vista, Yuma, Northwest, and Southeast Tucson.
It also is a Joint Commission-accredited, level 1a complexity teaching hospital, providing tertiary-level care. The SAVAHCS offers a beautiful 150-acre campus with a full range of medical and mental health services for Veterans, including a 31-bed inpatient psychiatry/substance use acute treatment unit, a 25-bed mental health residential rehabilitation treatment program for substance use disorders (SUD) and PTSD treatment, intensive outpatient programs for SUD and PTSD, homeless programs, and more. The SAVAHCS operates a 24-hour emergency department and is the host site for various regional referral centers of excellence including the Polytrauma Network Site, the Southwest Blind Rehabilitation Center, and the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MHRRTP). The SAVAHCS is the principal teaching affiliate of the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Annually nearly 1,000 physician and associated health trainees participate in health care training programs at the SAVAHCS.
Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any of the US States
ABMS Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Ophthalmology
Completion of Glaucoma fellowship
Work Schedule: Full-time, Permanent, position. Shared call rotation required.
