Under general supervision, responsible for independently collecting, accessioning, processing, performing, and reporting moderately complex and waived testing according to physician orders and in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, FDA, TJC, CLIA, OSHA regulations to facilitate optimum quality patient care. The employee is responsible for performing and recording environmental and instrument QC, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring high quality interactions with patients.
Essential Functions:
Conducts laboratory testing competently, such as dipstick and microscopic urinalysis, wet preps, pregnancy test, Grp A beta streptococcal screening, point-of-care glucose, rapid hemoglobin and/or other tests to provide diagnostic information to ordering provider. (20%)
Performs venipuncture for specimen collection on all age groups, using at least 2 patient identifiers and ensuring specimens are labeled in front of the patient correctly with date and initials as required. Tracks specimens in laboratory information system to be sent to core laboratory for testing. Processes and preserves specimens following instructions in procedures or laboratory information system. (20%)
Maintains records of instrumentation maintenance. Operates moderately complex and waived testing instrumentation. Maintains laboratory instrumentation as required by procedure or manufacturers? recommended guidelines. (20%)
Identifies problems and either performs the necessary adjustments or conducts maintenance. (10%)
Performs accessioning into the laboratory information system utilizing appropriate barcoded labels. (10%)
Reports test results in laboratory information system and maintains required documentation of results. (10%)
Orders laboratory supplies from Central Supply in order to perform all procedures and testing available. (10%)
Education:
High School Diploma or GED Required
Work Experience:
1-3 years of experience as a phlebotomist or laboratory technician in a hospital/medical facility or medical assistant with hospital/medical laboratory testing experience Required
Licenses:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
Knowledge of moderately complex and waived laboratory tests processes and testing procedures.
Knowledge of quality control procedures to maintain/ensure testing integrity.
Knowledge of safety and infection control practices to ensure a safe environment of care.
Familiar with regulatory compliance in quality control and competency requirements.
Good communication and customer relation skills to ensure patient safety and quality processes in the laboratory.
Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented work in identifying, accessioning, and handling specimens for processing and testing.
Basic computer and hospital/laboratory information system skills
