The South Texas Veterans Health Care System is seeking a part-time Physician - Associate Director - Clinical (AD/C) for the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) in San Antonio, Texas. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. English Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board Certified/Board Eligible in Geriatrics Fellowship training, certification or extensive experience in Geriatrics. Must have experience conducting clinical investigations and managing quality improvement projects. Must have the expertise necessary to be clinically credentialed, provide clinical care, and participate in ongoing geriatrics medical care at the host VA (STVHCS Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Light lifting and carrying, under 15 pounds, Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (4hrs); Standing (4hrs); Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors ["The Associate Director - Clinical (AD/C) will be responsible of supervising staff assigned to the clinical programs section and has responsibility for oversight for clinical projects initiated by GRECC clinical staff. Clinical responsibilities as a Physician will provide care in geriatrics through GRECC programs and at the GRECC outpatient clinics including the primary care geriatrics clinics, consultation clinics and telehealth geriatrics clinics. Duties of the Geriatrics Outpatient Clinical Programs: Responsible for providing and overseeing the evaluation and management of patients in the outpatient geriatrics clinics and for providing consultation through face-to-face clinics, telehealth clinics and E-consults. Provides extensive expertise in the treatment of conditions occurring in older patients, including but not limited to: (a) medical illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, chronic renal insufficiency and others; (b) medical management of conditions commonly occurring in older adults including but not limited to: lower urinary tract symptoms, osteoarthritis and polypharmacy; (c) geriatric syndromes that are often multifactorial in etiology such as cognitive impairment and dementia, gait instability, urinary incontinence, functional decline and mood disorders. Participates in other clinical activities as appropriate to the needs of the medical center as compatible with the overall time demands of the position. These may include inpatient medical activities. Supports and enhances facility philosophy and goals. Responsible for providing teaching and supervision to fellows, residents, medical students, and other allied health trainees in the clinical setting. Duties of the Associate Director - Clinical (AD/C): Functions as the Section Chief for the clinical programs within GRECC, supervising staff assigned to the section as well as overseeing administrative functions. Supports the primary responsibility of GRECC clinical activities which is to apply new knowledge and ideas, evaluate their usefulness in a patient care setting and demonstrate their practicality for exporting throughout the Veterans Affairs (VA) system. Clinical activities should serve as vehicles for the education of health care professionals in the care of the aged and for the provision of critical resources for health services research and development studies locally and system wide. Supports the recruitment and retention of staff, ensuring efficient operations of the geriatrics clinical programs sponsored by GRECC in accordance with criteria and standards for GRECCs interaction with facility staff outside of the Service to coordinate clinical educational activities about geriatrics in other parts of the health care system providing care to geriatric patients. Oversees the administrative aspects of the clinical geriatrics training programs involving GRECC, including the clinical fellowship program and the resident and medical student rotations as GRECC. Coordinates with the Associate Director of Education/Evaluation (AD/EE) and/or the Director of Graduate Education in planning and executing clinical education programs and clinical demonstration models as week as coordinating on fellowship programs in geriatric medicine. Fulfill obligations of the GRECC Clinical Director as determined by VA Central Office.
