Under minimal supervision, directs day to day coding activities that include coding, abstracting and compliance to include vendors. Ensures appropriate administration of processes for accuracy, compliance, timely billing and optimum reimbursement of services. Apply and implement departmental policies to ensure compliance with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Office of Inspector General (OIG) and other governmental and regulatory agencies. Direct assigned coding staff, attend provider and department meetings as needed, provide training to coding staff, providers, and departments to ensure quality assurance, and oversee the day to day activities of all coding and charge capture functions.
Essential Functions:
Assists ACFO of Revenue Cycle in directing day to day operational activities and in identifying revenue and compliance issues to facilitate positive evolution of abstracting, coding and feedback functions. (15%)
Monitors all incoming service volumes for optimal distribution to facilitate timely abstraction. (15%)
Reviews and reports on all coding staff production, quality, and lag times to maintain a timely and accurate revenue cycle. (10%)
Monitors quality assurance for assigned coders and uses quality assurance process to identify areas in need of attention. (10%)
Sets and enforces clear expectations for staff and timely and accurate completion of job performance appraisals. (15%)
Collaborates with assigned departments and providers to ensure optimal charge capture and provide open and effective communication. (15%)
Identifies problems or opportunities for improvement, formulates solutions, and involves others in the implementation as necessary and required. (5%)
Works with coding and billing staff to provide timely information requests. (5%)
Responds in a timely manner to coder and biller questions with backup documentation or research instructions to further the education of coders and billers. (5%)
Co-chairs roundtables, huddles, staff meetings, and other assigned department functions. (5%)
Education:
Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree, Health Care Degree and/or certification(s) listed below with experience or a combination thereof required. Required or
Work Experience:
7-9 years Five years coding experience required.Two years in a lead or supervisory role required.Experience in a hospital based, academic setting preferred. Required
Licenses:
RHIA-Registered Health Information Administrator - AHIMA - American Health Information Management Association Required or
RHIT-Registered Health Information Technician - AHIMA - American Health Information Management Association Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of coding and compliance as it relates to a hospital based, academic setting.
Strong oral and written communication, organization, prioritizing, proficiency in all areas of coding, research, and problem resolution skills.
