Job Summary
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health is recruiting a full-time academic emergency physician to advance and grow the academic mission of our Department. Preference will be given to faculty who have a fellowship training, dedicated interest, and track record of educational and research accomplishments in Emergency Ultrasound. This includes Ultrasound educational experience on resident, fellow, and faculty level. Faculty are expected to be highly motivated and engaged academicians, robustly contributing to and aligned with our departmental mission of 'Serving Our Patients and Leading Our Specialty.' As such, our recruitment will place a strong emphasis on teamwork and collaboration.
This faculty position will report directly to the Director of Service for Emergency Medicine at Denver Health. As a full-time academic faculty position, based at the sponsoring institution for the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine, there will be a heavy emphasis and expectations of scholarship/research, teaching and education. All faculty are expected to contribute and promote in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
The emergency department (ED) at Denver Health includes a 44-bed adult ED with an additional 13-bed adult fast track, a 19-bed pediatric ED and urgent care, and a 23-bed CDU providing observation medicine. With a combined annual census of more than 100,000 patients from highly diverse culture and backgrounds, the ED at Denver Health is the second busiest in Colorado. The Ernest E Moore MD Shock Trauma Center at Denver Health is the primary trauma referral center for the Rocky Mountain Region. Additionally, the acuity managed by the adult ED is high, with a 25% admission rate. Staffing in the adult and pediatric EDs is provided by board-certified emergency physicians, emergency medicine residents and subspecialty fellows, and advanced practice providers. Strong and extremely collaborative relationships exist among physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, and consultative services.

The Emergency Medicine Physician makes immediate medical decisions and acts to prevent death or further disability. The incumbent provides immediate recognition, evaluation, care, stabilization, and disposition of patients, practicing evidence-based, high-quality state-of-the art medicine employing a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
The Emergency Medicine Physician directs emergency medical staff in an emergency department to optimize coordination of care between nurses, assistants, specialists, residents, and other medical staff.
Physicians at Denver Health are faculty members of the University of Colorado School of Medicine serve as teachers for students seeking clinical experience at Denver Health and provide education for post graduate medical trainees.
Essential Functions:
Teaching and Training: Instruct students seeking clinical experience at Denver Health and provide education for post graduate medical trainees. (20%)
Deliver Emergency Care to Patients:
Stabilize patients in critical condition.
Evaluate patients' vital signs & lab data to determine emergency intervention needs and priority of treatment.
Conduct primary patient assessments that include information from prior medical care.
Analyze records, examination information, or test results to diagnose medical conditions.
Direct and coordinate activities of nurses, assistants, specialists, residents, and other medical staff.
Monitor patients' conditions, and reevaluate treatments, as necessary.
Select and prescribe medications to address patient needs.

Develop a Plan of Care for Patients
Discuss patients' treatment plans with physicians and other medical professionals.
Encourages increased patient understanding and involvement in care.
Communicate likely outcomes of medical diseases or traumatic conditions to patients or their representatives.
Consult with hospitalists and other professionals, such as social workers, regarding patients' hospital admission, continued observation, transition of care, or discharge.
Identify factors that may affect patient management, such as age, gender, barriers to communication, and underlying disease. (30%)
Compliance: Establish and communicate protocols to meet contractual, regulatory and accreditation requirements. (10%)
Staff Management: Oversee the activities of staff which includes but is not limited to sourcing, hiring, and training new team members, creating and managing schedules, evaluating performance, and providing coaching to engage and motivate team members, identifying and applying career advancement opportunities for team members, and helping to resolve employee issues and disputes, mentorship and guidance. (10%)
