Description

As a research scientist in the Tchieu lab at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), you'll use both mouse and human pluripotent stem cells to investigate the fundamental building blocks in brain development as well as determine the mechanisms that cause neurological disorders like autism. Your goal will be to use molecular, cellular and biochemistry to answer questions related to what genes control brain growth and differentiation, what are the mechanisms that confer risk for both autism and congenital heart disease, and does viral infection cause signs of early neurodegeneration? You will be supported by an energetic team of research assistants and graduate students requiring excellent teamwork and communication skills. Your success will expand our knowledge and the data you generate can help millions of families affected by neurological disease while simultaneously developing your critical thinking and research program as an expert in this space.

The key responsibilities in this position include:

1. In vitro modeling of genetic variants causing neurological and/or cardiac disorders using mammalian cell culture.
2. Problem-solve research challenges and develop applicable platforms for investigation.
3. Prepare complete documentation of research activities for reference purposes - including protocol development.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required: Ph.D. in related discipline, MD, or equivalent required.
The ideal candidates must have and M.D. or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Developmental Biology, or a similar field. The candidate should demonstrate a strong research knowledge, technical and troubleshooting skills and a familiarity with the academic lab environment. Evidence of a first author published manuscript and a passion for neurobiology related research are a plus. Experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, genome engineering, and/or flow cytometry is highly desirable.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrate attention to detail, strong organizational skills, supervisory ability, and an innovative approach to experimental design. Computer literate and working knowledge of software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, and database). Analytical ability sufficient to compare data; mathematical ability sufficient to perform algebraic calculations and statistical analysis. Ability to synthesize information and to create and deal with new situations by applying past experiences. Expressed willingness to teach others and share results. Capable of meeting time demands necessary to execute experiments.
