The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) is looking to hire a Staff Pulmonologist to serve as the Pulmonary Clinical Lead and Fellowship Site Director for Pulmonary Allergy and Critical Care Medicine (PACCM). Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Physical Requirements: Physical demands include repetitive body movements including the following: frequent reaching, standing, walking, and lifting of equipment and/or patients to provide patient care. This position requires extension of the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction including above or below shoulder level, during the provision of patient care, including retrieval of needed equipment, supplies and to make contact with the patient. This position requires the maintenance of an upright position to perform duties associated with patient care. This position is typically non-sedentary, and frequently involves being in the standing position. This position requires moving about accomplish tasks, such as assisting with patient ambulation and moving one patient area to the next. This position requires the raising of objects from a lower position to a higher position or the movement of objects horizontally position to position. Lifting may be done to move a patient from one location to the next, i.e.- from the exam table to the chair, and in the movement of equipment or supplies. Note: Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to assuming clinical duties. The BLS requirement is satisfied by successfully completing an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider Course or Military Training Network (MTN). The VAPHS is a major teaching site for the academic affiliate, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) and UPMC Graduate Medical Education program. Appropriate time will be allocated for teaching and administrative efforts. Research effort will be allocated contingent on funding and/or other approved research activities. A successful candidate must be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM). The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Act as the Pulmonary Division Clinical Lead, reporting to the Pulmonary Division Chief Organize and oversee inpatient and outpatient clinical schedules and rotations for attendings, fellows, and residents Serve as Site Director for the PACCM Fellowship for approximately 12-18 fellows per academic year. Duties include participation in the PACCM Fellowship Oversight Committee; oversight of monthly GME trainee duty hour tracking; developing clinical and educational schedules, chart audits to assess fellows' performance; monthly orientation for fellows and residents; maintain division folder content in shared VA reference/resource drive Collaborate with UPMC and UPSOM leadership to support fellow, resident and medical student development Participate in monthly ICU and pulmonary consult service orientation and educational lectures to students, residents, and fellows Precept fellows on common Pulmonary procedures including fiberoptic bronchoscopy, airway management, non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation management, central venous and arterial line placement and management, thoracentesis and pleural catheter placement and management. Organize and oversee the monthly medical ICU and pulmonary elective rotations (60+ interns and residents per year) Opportunity to participate in or lead multi-modality Pulmonary and COVID Rehabilitation Programs Attending provider for medical ICU, inpatient pulmonary consult service, and outpatient pulmonary clinics. Sleep medicine practice optional. Participate in PFT interpretation for VAPHS and partner sites in VISN 4. Serve on VAPHS Committees (e.g., VAPHS Critical Care Steering Committee, VAPHS Ventilator Associated Pneumonia Committee, VAPHS Palliative Care Council), Task Forces, and other duties as needed to further the institutional mission, at the discretion of the VP Medicine and Chief of Staff. Preferred Experience: Completion of ACGME-accredited Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship; Fellowship training and BC/BE in Sleep Medicine (optional).
