Job Summary
The Risk Manager is responsible for the activities of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, which supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization and promotes high-quality patient care, compliance with UCSF policies, patient safety, and patient and family services and care. The Risk Manager works collaboratively with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Mission Bay to promote continuity of care and operations between the two sites.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in hospital risk management, quality management or claims management program, or comparable experience
- Proven project management and customer service skills to effectively manage multiple priorities in a complex, challenging environment. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility, anticipates and effectively handles change
- Broad knowledge of risk management and claims management concepts. Ability to apply knowledge in an acute care setting to improve risk management operations
- Knowledge of hospital, HR, and UC policies, and processes. Comprehensive knowledge of relevant risk management industry, federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Ability to apply policy knowledge to suggest improvements to risk management compliance
- Skills to collaborate within and across departments/locations to coordinate daily risk management activities and resolve problems. Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with peers, patients, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff
- Proven analytical abilities and problem-solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution. Demonstrates sound judgment

- Advanced user of internal risk management information technology applications. Knowledge of available information technology software in the risk management field
- Familiarity with QA standards/processes and Joint Commission requirements
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access databases for use in the development of reports to governing bodies
- Authority and responsibility in or for a similar size organization, with similar scope and complexity to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital
- Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) certification
Job Summary

The Risk Manager works collaboratively with UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Mission Bay to promote continuity of care and operations between the two sites.
The Risk Manager works independently and in collaboration with the UCSF Health Risk Management Executive Director and staff, other UCSF Health and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital staff, and physician leaders. A crucial part of the Manager's job is the development of close, strategic and collaborative relationships across the institution. The Manager provides risk advice in a variety of areas, including consent, end-of-life issues, unilateral withdrawal of life-prolonging treatment, mandatory reporting, patient/family/visitor behavior, threat management, medication management, adverse event management, patient complaints and grievances, Medical and Nursing Board complaints, privacy and confidentiality, surgical complications, disclosure of adverse events, discharge and discontinuation of care, elopement and AMA, media requests, policies and procedure, to name a few. The incumbent will guide physicians and staff to reduce the risk of harm to patients by assisting them in the development of retrospective reviews following an adverse event or claim, project management, or problem-solving. A crucial part of the Risk Manager's job is to be able to think and advise under time and highly charged pressure and scrutiny by media and stakeholders.
The UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Risk Manager is also responsible for the development of close strategic and collaborative relationships across the institution in the areas of general, employment, cyber, and privacy liability risk.
The Manager works in conjunction with the Executive Director to oversee Risk Management in the performance of detailed technical and risk data analysis, chart review and summary, data collection, and data entry into and extraction of data and reports from the BETA Healthcare group database or the appropriate line of insurance. The Manager also reviews and analyzes data from the institution's quality and incident reporting systems
The Manager identifies potential problems with the care related to adverse events and liability claims. The Manager works in conjunction with the Executive Director to oversee the tracking/trending of reports related to the Risk Management Consultations.
The Risk Manager works with risk management staff and outside counsel on GL, EPL, and professional liability claims to research and respond to discovery requests, deposition management, trial preparation, and strategy. The Risk Manager works in conjunction with the Executive Director to oversee the management of subpoenas and the conduct of outside counsel in their interactions with our physicians or employees. The Risk Manager works with the Executive Director to co-manage professional liability cases and events that involve both the BETA insurance program and the UC Self Insured Professional Liability program.
The Risk Manager provides advice to the clinical, Privacy, Human Resources, Nursing, Patient Relations, Media, Marketing, and Quality and Safety Departments and engages with key stakeholders.
The Risk Manager is responsible for assisting the Executive Director with oversight of the professional liability program for UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, including all ambulatory practices as appropriate,
The Risk Manager's assignment includes departments and projects with significant clinical complexity and/or organizational scope. The Manager demonstrates knowledge of professional liability standards of care for all practitioners (nursing, physician, social, etc.) and other laws and regulations, including but not limited to, Joint Commission Standards, The Medicare Conditions of Participation, Title 22, and other California laws and regulations. The incumbent will demonstrate basic knowledge and the ability to research global issues and provide risk advice accordingly in cooperation with other Risk Management Staff. The primary function of the Risk Management Department is to minimize financial exposure to the Medical Center, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, UCSF School of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Pharmacy, LPPI, UCSF's Medical Group, and UCSF affiliates arising from professional liability matters. The department serves as a resource to all Medical Center and Medical Group staff/employees regarding risk management issues. Risk management consultation is provided on a 24-hour basis. The department is located at 350 Parnassus, Suite 507, at Mission Bay Hospital on 4th Street in San Francisco and at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. This position's location is at the UCSF Benioff Children's Oakland with additional attendance at meetings and events at the San Francisco locations as required.
The UCSF Risk Manager position is a dynamic fast pace position with tremendous opportunity for learning and developing and expanding Risk Management skills. This key position requires attention to detail and critical thinking. The Risk Manager is part of the team responsible for defending UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and UCSF Health in actions for medical negligence. This position affords the opportunity to work with talented and nationally known physicians and other health care providers and to assist them in responding to requests for testimony, records, and concerns related to clinical care. The department works as a team responsive to risk consultations from the UCSF workforce.
This position is ideal for individuals with experience in the legal and/or clinical worlds who want to expand their knowledge base and become an expert in Risk Management in a complex healthcare environment.
