*Staff working at a MSK New Jersey location must be up to date with COVID-19 vaccination, which includes having completed the primary COVID-19 vaccination series and booster once eligible as mandated by New Jersey State. All New Jersey staff not yet eligible for a booster must receive a booster within 3 weeks of becoming eligible as a condition of continued employment at MSK.

The Lab Manager will supervise and perform technical and administrative tasks in a large laboratory. Oversee equipment maintenance. Insure adequate supplies for experimental needs. Assist Investigator in personnel management. Manage lab safety programs to insure compliance with all applicable regulations. Assist in laboratory space and facilities planning; make recommendations for changes; maintain inventory of laboratory furniture, equipment, and supplies. Review literature and recommend experiments directed toward furthering a specific research project or projects. Prepare reports, charts, and graphs directed at communicating results at scientific meetings or in preparing manuscripts for publication.
Principal Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day activities within the research laboratory, including such activities as insuring operation of essential equipment, making sure adequate supplies are available for routine experimental procedures, and reviewing budgets.
- Act as liaison between lab and host safety and regulatory offices to insure compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Develop laboratory guidelines; maintain procedures manuals; and evaluate new materials and equipment.
- Will carry out research projects.
- May evaluate new techniques and technology.
- Enforce exit policy procedures by collecting/archiving materials from departing lab members.
- Train incoming personnel in proper lab conduct.
- May instruct in experimental protocols.
- Perform complex scientific procedures.
- Assist in the writing and editing of manuscripts.
- Provide recommendations for operational improvements
- Manage technicians, provide training, mentorship and performance feedback
- Oversee daily lab operations
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree or higher in health or physical sciences or equivalent in education and experience.
- Five or more year's lab experience including at least three years supervisory experience.
- Ability to perform highly complex experiments with high levels of reliability and accuracy within time constraints.
- Ability to supervise others.
- Ability to initiate and compose communications for various purposes in an appropriate style.
- In depth knowledge in a specific area and general knowledge in broad areas of responsibility.
- In-depth understanding of organizational structure both within and outside the work unit, including the role of each position in the group and in other groups.
- Ability to review goals, analyze processes necessary to achieve those goals, and develop techniques and systems required to meet those goals.
- Often explores new areas and seeks opportunities to apply new knowledge to work.
- Proven ability to write and edit manuscripts.
Physical Requirements
- Occasionally lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Occasionally bends and stoops.
- Occasionally reaches and grasps with arms and hands.
- Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
- Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
- This laboratory has research that focuses on the use of small vertebrate animals.
