Member of APHA communications team providing support to the Centers for Public Health Policy; Climate, Health and Equity; and School, Health and Education by reviewing public-facing information and creating communications materials and dissemination plans for reports, fact sheets and other publications or online materials. Also doing general communications work for APHA, including support for social media and primary responsibility for Inside Public Health. Oversees APHA’s Editorial Review team and responds to staff requests for copyediting of emails and other external communications.
Centers for Public Health Policy, Climate, Health and Equity, and School, Health and Education team support:
Write and edit a variety of communications materials such as blog posts, website and newsletter copy, webinar announcements, op-eds and infographics.
Review and copyedit materials such as reports and fact sheets and translate technical language for a lay audience.
Contribute to social media, including planning, messaging, engaging and evaluating.
Attend and participate in regular Centers for Public Health Policy; Climate, Health and Equity; and School, Health and Education team meetings. Provide strategic communications support for the dissemination of work Serve as liaison between the Centers and Communications Department.
Working with the Public Relations Specialist, develop and maintain contacts with reporters who cover environmental health, climate change and environmental justice. Respond rapidly to media inquiries, arrange interviews and develop talking points. Write, edit and distribute news releases, statements and other materials, and post to the website. Utilize media relations software to maintain media lists and disseminate media materials.
Provide communications support for APHA environmental health and climate change initiatives.
Serve as lead on APHA’s Editorial Review team, coordinating responses to staff requests.
Edits all external APHA communications (or assigns such communications to other members of the Editorial Review team) for grammar, AP style and APHA voice.
Gives recommendations to staff by providing best practice documentation for email, web content and other communications.
Research and write blogs and articles for Public Health Newswire and other channels.
Serve as editor of Inside Public Health, assembling and editing content from staff throughout the organization and disseminate to APHA members.
Serve on the APHA Get Ready team, working on editing, writing and other campaign projects.
Perform other duties as assigned based on needs of the department and the Association.
Bachelor’s degree and four to five years of public/media relations, journalism or communications experience. Health/public health/environment background a plus. Strong verbal and written communication skills with excellent grammar, editorial, proofreading and AP style skills. Ability to manage multiple projects at once with attention to detail and follow-through concurrently to meet overlapping deadlines. Strong initiative. Works well independently, but participates actively as a team member and can collaborate with a variety of functional groups and communicate constructively with others. Fluency with social media a plus. Personal presence and ability to work with the news media and meet deadlines. Experience communicating on behalf of national advocacy/public interest policy efforts. Working knowledge of issues related to health equity, environmental justice and/or climate change and health is a plus. Travel to the Annual Meeting is required with other occasional travel possible.
Requires occasional lifting and moving up to 25 lbs.

Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hybrid work environment.
Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Monday - Friday (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
