This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: The Gastroenterologist for this part time position will have completed a Transplant Hepatology fellowship and will be expected to supervise the care of pre- and post-liver transplant patients. The Gastroenterologist for this position will also have completed or been engaged in a Master's program for clinical research training, have experience as the PI on sponsored studies for liver disease treatments and have demonstrated ability to access and mine databases (including VA and others such as SRTR) for clinical research. Procedure notes are required to be entered directly into the medical information system. Proper documentation of workload including completion of consult requests, event capture, or encounter forms is required within the timelines specified by National, VISN, or facility guidelines. The provider may perform additional procedures or manage additional conditions based on specialized training and qualifications. Responsible for the evaluation of all new GI consults both inpatient and outpatient, with appropriate responses provided to the consulting party (including treatment plans, if applicable) within National, VlSN, or facility guidelines. Diagnosis and treatment within the scope of the Gastroenterological specialty are required. Telephonic contact is required in urgent/emergent situations. Appropriate diagnosis and/or treatment may require contact with colleagues at VA or Non-VA facilities. Obtain informed consent for any and all invasive procedures to be performed. The discussion of the treatment plan with patient and/or family members is required. Resident, Student, and Fellow Education Gastroenterologists will be expected to supervise any residents, students, fellows, or teams assigned to their areas of responsibility. Engage in furthering the education of medical residents, students, and fellows by provision of Grand Rounds presentations, noon lecture series presentation, etc., with an emphasis on development of the skills required to apply medical knowledge selectively based on individual cases and circumstances. Research Responsibilities is expected to promote and facilitate research amongst both Housestaff and Faculty. Participate in national VHA conference calls and audio conferences on issues related to the Gastroenterology Section, the Facility, and any new programs or initiatives affecting the two entities. Participation will be assigned by the Chief, Gastroenterology Section; Chief, Medical Service; Chief of Staff; or Director, NWIHCS. Participate in any conferences, calls, or meetings related to patient outcomes, customer service, service improvement, or the like, as assigned by supervisory staff. Represent the Section or the Service by serving on committees or task forces, as well as with service to local, state, or national professional service organizations, both inside and outside of the VA (as applicable and assigned).
