Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is seeking to employee an Physician/Neurologist who will be responsible for maintaining professional, technical and administrative knowledge, competencies and skills to provide effective, timely and quality responses to our patients who present themselves with acute or emergent health care problems. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: VA Directive and Handbook 5019, applicants must be able to perform the duties as a Physician. Functional Requirements: Light lifting (under 15lbs), use of fingers, both hands required, walking 1 hour, standing 4 hours, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability. Environmental Factors: Radiant energy, electrical energy, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working with hands in water, working closely with others, working alone, protracted or irregular hours of work. ["The incumbent will provide professional patient care approximately 90% of the time and administrative duties 10% of the time. The duties and responsibilities of the Neurologist physician include but are not limited to the following:\n- The neurology physician is responsible for providing neurological services in hospitalized, extended care and outpatient settings, and designing diagnostic and therapeutic plans to meet the patient's needs. A major percentage of the physician's time will be devoted to hands-on patient care.\n- He/she is responsible for coordinating activities of other health service personnel, resolving problems affecting patient care and providing appropriate education for the patient and/or family members regarding the patient's care, patient's illness and its management.\n- The neurology physician may perform EMG and nerve conduction studies.\n- The neurology physician screens outpatient neurology consults for appropriateness and works closely with referring providers to answer consults where appropriate or suggest studies that might be helpful prior to actual visit.\n- Participated in educational activities to stay current with community standards and development/enhancement of skills and abilities. Every concern on the patient will be addressed in clinical assessment, patient care delivery, and in daily interaction with, and treatment of patients.\n- Working with clinical staff, supervisors, managers and team leaders in the facility to achieve and maintain high standards of performance.\n- Participating in the development of long and short-term goals for the continued improvement of medical services throughout the organization.\n- Functioning as advisor to the Associate Chiefs of Staff, Chief of Staff, Associate Director, Associate Director for Nursing and Patient Care Services, and Facility Director on issues related to the provision of neurological services.\n- Functioning as a collaborating provider or mentor for Advance Practice Nurses/Nurse Practitioners, Physicians Assistants, and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, as needed.\n- Participating on Medical Center committees, workgroups and systems redesign projects, as needed.\n- Contributing to the development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of neurology services to patients.\n- Facilitating compliance with standards established by oversight and regulatory entities such as Joint Commission, CARF, OSHA, CAP, OIG, etc. VHA Physician Total Rewards.
