The Department of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is searching for an outstanding tenure-track/tenured faculty member at the Associate/Full rank (rank and tenure status commensurate with qualifications) in the broad area of water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and microbiological pathogens. A doctoral degree in environmental health sciences, environmental microbiology, environmental engineering, or a related scientific discipline is required. To be considered as a strong candidate for this position, a solid record of obtaining research funding from major funding agencies (e.g., NIH, EPA, NSF) is necessary. Collaborating on multidisciplinary projects is expected.
The successful candidate will be expected to enrich the department’s research enterprise by obtaining and maintaining extramurally funded research in the broad area of WASH inclusive of microbial pathogens and environmental microbiology. Specific research areas may include the following: water quality, sanitation, and health; human populations and environmental biomonitoring; environmental microbiology; interactions among environmental chemicals, elements, and microbial pathogens; human and environmental microbiomics; One Health approaches; disasters; climate change; and microbial risks. In addition to developing an independent research program, the candidate will be expected to teach graduate level courses in their area of expertise, advise and mentor graduate students, and engage in appropriate service activities.
The Department offers the MPH degree with a concentration in Environmental and Occupational Health, two MSPH degrees with concentrations in Environmental and Occupational Health Science or Industrial Hygiene, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences. The Department is 1 of 5 academic departments in the UAB School of Public Health, with active collaborations within the School and with faculty in the School of Engineering, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and College of Arts and Sciences. Founded in 1978, the UAB School of Public Health has grown to 75 full-time faculty and 1100 students. In 2019, the school had more than $37 million in research funding and has been ranked in the top 20 NIH-funded Schools of Public Health for the last 10 years.
