Dean of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Chief Academic Officer of Renown Health
The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), a Carnegie R1 research university, seeks a proven and successful executive and academic leader to take the helm of an organization moving into a transformative era as the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) integrates with Renown Health, a highly vibrant locally owned non-profit health system. UNR Med and Renown have advanced their individual missions through an affiliation agreement that integrates clinical education, research, and patient care for the benefit of Northern Nevada. Reporting to the President and Provost of UNR, the Dean of the School of Medicine will oversee an historic 50-year landmark relationship. As Renown’s Chief Academic Officer (CAO), the Dean/CAO will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer of Renown and serve as a member of Renown’s Senior Executive Team.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many health disparities to light across the nation, including Nevada’s urgent need of expanded health-science training and research capacity. The state has high rates of chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes, and there is the need for a dramatic growth of preventive care services. Nevada, like other states, faces a shortage of health-care professionals: the state ranks 45th out of 50 states in the number of physicians per population and has the lowest number of physicians in residency training per population among all states with medical schools. There are also severe shortages of nurses and other allied health professionals. Within the research arena, UNR boasts a number of nationally ranked basic science research departments as benchmarked by NIH funding but lags substantially in clinical research activity. Both UNR Med and Renown see this as a tremendous opportunity to address these issues head-on, with existing foundational talent and resources to make a tremendous impact. This is also the opportunity for the new Dean/CAO.
UNR has earned a reputation for its rich diversity, strength in medical and health sciences education, and basic science research. The 2022 edition of U.S. News & World Report ranks the R1 institution 26th for medical school diversity, and within the top 50 for the proportion of recent graduates practicing direct care in underserved and rural areas. The task now is to integrate the academic and clinical components in a coordinated way alongside Renown Health to grow a broader clinical research enterprise, train and educate much needed physicians, and work with clinical partners to provide excellent care to Nevadans in urban and rural communities. The Dean/CAO has a unique opportunity to address the state’s pressing health challenges while further developing UNR Med’s reputation nationally. Moreover, the Dean/CAO will focus on attracting and retaining a world-class faculty, student-body, and ultimately physicians dedicated to serving the unique needs of Nevada.
