The Infection Prevention & Control Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care and/or program requirements. He/she is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice. The Infection Prevention & Control, Registered Nurse assumes the following roles and responsibilities: 1. This position requires flexibility in schedule and assignment, as this is a 24/7 facility. 2. Participates in performance improvement efforts related to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programs. 3. Performs IPC surveillance, consultation and risk assessments and promotes quality outcomes. 4. Assists in the development and evaluation of clinical guidelines, policies and procedures relevant to IPC programs. 5. Demonstrates grade appropriate and consistent critical thinking skills. 6. Engages staff in patient care rounds to evaluate integration of IPC practices in all clinical areas. 7. Communicates proficiently and initiates referrals to other disciplines and/or services as appropriate. 8. The nurse can manage problems safely and effectively, recognizing his/her scope of practice. 9. Effectively functions as a leader, guiding others in Infection Control principles. 10. Organizes and completes own assignments in an effective and timely manner, assisting team members as necessary. 11. Strong interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants, and outside agencies. 12. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determines appropriate level of intervention; develops and applies effective solutions. 13. Demonstrates organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion. 14. Participates as a member or assumes a leadership role on formal service level committees, councils, or performance improvement teams. 15. Assesses staff members or patient's learning needs, learning preference, and readiness to learn. Modifies teaching approach based on knowledge of human behavior, motivations, and reactions to situations. 16. Assists the UPC, and the NM in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the Unit Score Card, addressing process related to the feedback from All Employee Survey. 17. Proactively makes leadership choices to prioritize Veteran-Centered needs, operates within allocated resources and takes the initiative to find solutions to operational challenges. 18. Maintains knowledge and understanding of Joint Commission requirements and ensures compliance with VA, JC, and OSHA standards. 19. Assists in the application of epidemiologic principles and statistical methods, including risk stratification, to identify target populations, analyze trends and risk factors and design and evaluate prevention and control strategies. 20. Collaborates with the IPC team to develop and coordinate strategies with nursing leadership, the chief of infectious disease and other sections or services to evaluate and manage complex events and unexpected situations such as exposures, outbreaks and environmental emergencies. 21. Provides consultation in planning construction and renovation projects that could impact patient care utilizing risk assessment criteria in consultation with the infectious diseases section. 22. Participates in the performance of an annual risk assessment and periodic evaluation and enhancement of the facility's infection control plan specific to practice settings, populations served and continuum of care. 23. Actively participates in service level, hospital wide, ad-hoc, VISN committees as well as the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and/or other professional organizations. 24. Discloses public health information via the Privacy Officer and ensures protection of patient information in accordance with VASDHS and VHA guidelines. 25. Participates in recruitment, retention and mentoring of IPC staff. 26. Assists in the evaluation and recommendation of equipment/products that promote prevention of infections and/or a safe environment. 27. Uses knowledge of the Environment of Care and the implications on patient health and safety to participate in evaluation, prevention and/or mitigation/ remediation of actual or potential hazards. 28. Collaborates with informatics colleagues to develop and/or enhance tools for data tracking, trending and reporting for effective use. 29. Perform other duties as assigned and appropriate for this level of RN. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday. 0800 - 1630.
