The Hematology Oncology Section of Medical Service at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center is seeking a board certified or eligible Hematologist Oncologist. This physician must have a keen interest in teaching, clinical care, and clinical research. This physician is responsible for providing consultation in Hematology-Oncology, both for diagnosis and treatment in the inpatient or outpatient settings. This position is part time and will work 10 hours per pay period (2 weeks). The duties of this position include but are not limited to: Evaluate, diagnose, and provide treatment in an outpatient setting or in the form of inpatient consultative services to patients of all ages presenting with illnesses and disorders of the blood and blood-forming tissues and/or malignant tumors. Makes medical diagnosis and treatment of a variety of malignancies in all stages. Directing the management of these patients and determining the most appropriate course of chemotherapy. The physician, as a member of the department, communicates with other healthcare providers to manage consultations and additional services, as required. Provide oversight and management of anemias, coagulation disorders and a variety of blood dyscrasias to include performing bone marrow biopsy. Providing state-of-the-art outpatient hematology/oncology care including new consultations, initiation/management of chemotherapy and maintaining proficiency with appropriate procedures required for care and follow-up on these patients Managing chronic medical problems and practicing preventive medicine. Provides management of problems specific to hematology /oncology patients. Provides consultative care to inpatients with hematology/oncology problems, including initiating and managing chemotherapy, and other consultative services Obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, order and evaluate appropriate laboratory testing, and plan and prescribe treatment for patients. Performing bone marrow aspirates and biopsies Provide direct patient care and trainee oversight Provide clinical education to Hematology Oncology Fellows, Internal Medicine residents and Medical Students. Teaching and supervision of students, residents, and fellows, and faculty mentoring. Patient care (Inpatient Hematology Oncology Consult service and Outpatient clinics) Collaborate with midlevel providers and physician colleagues with clear communication and documentation. Participates in the Medical Center's Quality Management Program through Hematology/Oncology indicators, monitors and by provision of peer review for outcome occurrence screening. Diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with hematology and oncology diseases according to standard, usual and acceptable or customary methods and techniques in the outpatient and inpatient settings. Providing medical oversight for the Chemotherapy Infusion Room. Cooperates and Participates in medical duties or functions related to quality of care and peer review along with improvement/performance improvement activities at the direct of the Chief of Medical Service. Perform and interpret peripheral blood smears, bone marrow aspirations and biopsy, administration of chemotherapeutic agents and biological response modifiers through all therapeutic routes, including intrathecal chemotherapy, the management and care of indwelling venous access catheters, and therapeutic phlebotomy. Performs other directly related duties as assigned. This position reports to the Section Chief, Hematology-Oncology within Medical Service. Work Schedule: In this part time position, the physician will work 10 hours per pay period (there are two weeks in one pay period).
