The Vice President, Hospital Operations, is responsible for direct oversight of the Peri-operative, Procedural, and Adult Emergency Department footprints on M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Centers East and West Bank campuses, the flagship hospital in the M Health Fairview Academic Health System. This role is also responsible for the Solid Organ Transplant Program, in a dyad relationship with the Service Line Chief, driving program development and growth to enhance the premier clinical program and the academic (research and education) mission. Additionally, the VP of Hospital Operations has matrixed accountability for System functions/services including Imaging, Rehab, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Spiritual Health, Guest Services, Patient Experience/Relations and Community Relations.
As a member of the UMMC senior leadership team, this role will provide operational support and collaborative leadership, including implementation of the strategic plan, interacting with finance for reporting and revenue cycle management, and service line leaders for program development. This role will also participate in the system peri-operative domain structure, and develop strong collaborative physician relationships, including with the Medical School Department Chairs to assure alignment between the medical center priorities and the Medical School. As a leader within an academic medical center, this role will be responsible for championing and supporting a healthy and vibrant clinical learning environment.
The VP of Hospital Operations will also partner with the UMMC senior leadership team to implement and sustain the M Health Fairview Operating Management System using lean methodology and philosophy to shape optimal care model planning and implementation, patient experience, employee engagement, quality and safety, and cost management and efficiency initiatives. Together with the Chief Nurse Officer (CNO) and Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA), the VP of operations will develop a culture that drives quality and safety as the first priority and shares responsibility for compliance with regulatory bodies.
Additionally, this role works to ensure and develop appropriate community relationships to enhance UMMC engagement and contributions to the local community, including community connections that align with diversity, equity and inclusion strategies. This may include representing the organization in the community through various civic and social organizations as well as in national, state and local health care association boards, consumer groups and other related health care agencies, as necessary.
Delivers services and maximizes operational excellence through use of quality and process/lean improvement tools and techniques to assess workflow opportunities and ensures process improvements
Provides leadership and direction for the development of strategies to promote the recruitment, retention and recognition of staff
Provides input to the service line budgets and manages within site budget parameters
Monitor and improve financial performance including encounter/RVU volumes, staff and other costs, and accounts receivable within the expectations of the Master Professional Services Agreement (MPSA)
Develops and manages annual operational and capital budgets and supports strategic planning from the service lines
Continuously implements strategies to improve patient satisfaction
In partnership with the CNO and VPMA, meets all regulatory requirements and works in collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure compliance with accrediting, regulatory, inspecting agencies including The Joint Commission (TJC), MN Department of Health, etc.
Masters Degree in Business or Healthcare
7 years of healthcare leadership
10+ years of experience in health care leadership which includes acute care leadership in an academic medical center
Clinical expertise or knowledge
