The University of Miami Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas (UMIA) seeks a Director of Research Support for Global Health and Hemispheric Affairs, working with the UMIA Director, to manage and drive the Institute’s global health and hemispheric research portfolio with a focus on issues related to Non-communicable Diseases, Health Systems and Universal Health Coverage, Social Justice, Health Policy, Poverty Reduction, Equity, Marginalized and Vulnerable Groups, Women and Gender, Migration, Civil Society and Non-governmental Actors, etc.
The position includes institutional development, strategy development; grants management; conducting and managing research; managing extensive bibliographic, primary, and secondary data; IRB support; managing, producing and co-authoring research publications for academic journals and for dissemination; and supporting UMIA in implementing research support platforms across the University
The position reports directly to UMIA Director with a close working relationship to the Senior Manager of Business Operations and will be supported by a Research Associate, with the potential for a research faculty appointment.
Global Health & Hemispheric Affairs:
Work closely with UMIA director to implement the vision for global health and to complete and/or advance research projects underway Catalyze a research portfolio focused on the hemisphere and on the key research areas of the Institute and of the Hemispheric University Consortium (HUC). Work with UMIA staff to develop programming and convene research meetings Help to plan, develop and implement a one, three, and five-year global health research agenda and hemispheric research agenda focusing on other core areas of work of the Institute, including the HUC Co-teach annual introduction to global health course Manage and co-author papers for publication in academic journals Oversee and grow a substantial portfolio of research grants and projects, including the development of new grants for research working with staff from UMIA, the Miller School of Medicine and the University´s development offices, as well as reaching out to research collaborators and universities throughout the Americas and around the world Hire, train, and supervise research support staff (e.g., research associates/student research assistants) Represent and advance UMIA and the Director´s work to external audiences, including travel when needed Disseminate and promote UMIA's research through strategic communications, including presentations at key conferences Identify strategic research collaboration opportunities for key partnerships both across the university and with external collaborators throughout the region of the Americas With Senior Manager of Business Operations, oversee budget for research activities and grants
Education: PhD or MD/MPH (preferred) or Master’s degree in public health or related discipline with outstanding record of academic participation and research management, and demonstrated ability to manage and conduct research that culminates in academic and policy publications.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of post-Masters level (or PhD-level preferred) experience in global health-related research, research management, data collection and information management, and management and use of extensive bibliographic networks and data.
Language skills: English and Spanish fluency and demonstrated academic writing ability required. Other language skills helpful, especially Portuguese and French.
