Ensures accurate and timely coding of inpatient records according to Detroit Medical Center (DMC) policies and procedures. Directs employees involved in medical records coding /abstracting, provides direction for all hospital coding activities, audits, education, and productivity standards required to reach unbilled targets at all DMC hospitals. Performs duties as necessary to support quality improvement process in the Medical Record department, as well as that of the hospitals. Provides leadership throughout the system in regards to coding and chargemaster inquiries. Develops and monitors the system-wide Clinical Documentation program. Works with hospital leadership to identify and address any missed opportunities regarding revenue and corrections to daily charges. Manages a 4 day DNFB for the system. Creates, reviews, and submits all monthly corporate reports to Vanguard Health System for Corporate Compliance Initiative. Coordinates internal and external compliance audits, including insurance and RACs. Ensure integrity of Audit Expert/ARMS databases by maintenance/revision of data as necessary. Remains abreast of all developments in the Medical Record field, especially as they apply to coding, reimbursement, and clinical database developments/changes. Identifies the need for policy development and/or revision, defines policies in collaboration with higher-level management, input, goals and objectives. Oversees or directs the development and/or revision of department procedures/ protocols. Approves procedures/protocols and/or seeks other departmental approvals as appropriate. Develops, monitors and revises functional processes. Provides input into the development and revision of organizational structure for function or service. Approves personnel actions such as hires, fires, disciplines, etc. Ensures the timely completion of performance appraisals. Develops short and long range goals and measures and oversees the assessment of goal attainment. Develops, seeks approval of, monitors and ensures compliance with budget for areas of responsibility. Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, Joint Commission requirements and DMC policies. As directed, implements external and internal audit recommendations. Ensures hospital departments achieve objectives for diversity of their suppliers.
1. Bachelors degree in Health Information Management or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
2. Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or eligible, Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Nurse (RN).
3. Five or more years of coding (inpatient and/or outpatient) leadership experience, to gain a thorough knowledge of clinical coding and related reimbursement.
4. Experience with electronic medical records.
