The Detroit Medical Center is one the largest academic medical centers in the United States, with a long and rich history of medical education, providing training in medical education for more than 100 years. As the nation shifted to more rigorous oversight of physician training, the DMC continued to be a leader in accredited programs in medical education beginning with the Ophthalmology Residency Programï¿½s accreditation in 1951, Pathology in 1953, Internal Medicine in 1956, Neurology in 1958 and Neurological Surgery in 1960. The DMC now trains the majority of practicing physicians in the State of Michigan including 70 percent of the stateï¿½s trauma surgeons and 60 percent of its emergency physicians.

The Chief Executive Officer has overall operational responsibility and oversight of DMC Harper University Hospital, DMC Hutzel Womenï¿½s Hospital, DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital and DMC Heart Hospital. The Chief Executive Officer will be responsible to lead by example, setting clear strategies and performance expectations in an environment of participation and collaboration with senior management, physicians, and the Joint Advisory Board(s).
Additionally, the Chief Executive Officer has responsibility for providing strong leadership, direction, and assistance in setting strategy with clearly defined expectations for the academic medical center.This executive will work closely with academic leadership in managing the relationships and contractual obligations with the academic partners, leading the development of progressive physician/hospital strategies, and executing plans in order to optimize the short- and long-term financial performance of the academic medical center.The Chief Executive Officer will also work closely with Tenetï¿½s corporate operational improvement and business development functions to bring innovative programs and approaches to the hospitals.These include programs to grow profitable service lines, align our investments in support of our physiciansï¿½ interests, and drive changes to increase the profitability of services.In addition, this executive will work with corporate functions on pricing of managed care contracts, quality improvement programs, leadership programs, capital requests, etc., that benefit the performance and potential of the facilities.
The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for building a strategy for the academic medical center that balances the long-term relationship with the academic partner and Tenetï¿½s overall financial and portfolio aspirations.The CEO has responsibility for establishing plans to address productivity, operational performance, staff retention and satisfaction the each academic medical center. He/she will partner with medical staff to foster quality, efficiently provided care.The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for establishing trust and emerging as a leader in key initiatives and strategies to continually improve the quality and level of services provided.
The Chief Executive Officer has responsibility for creating an environment that supports employee satisfaction, improved service and quality, as well as initiating a strategic process that addresses continuous measurable improvement. Further, the Chief Executive Officer will assist in the development and oversight of major capital projects on an ongoing basis to analyze the financial return.He/she will provide preliminary review of major capital projects from a strategic, operational and financial standpoint.
The Chief Executive Officer works closely with academic medical center leaders to assure action plans from monthly operations reviews are executed appropriately.He/she will exhibit strong leadership skills within the Detroit community engaging others and serving as a catalyst in improving community health.The CEO will utilize fact-based decision making to target growth initiatives affecting service line profitability, physician profitability, and market growth rates.This executive will also interface with Government Programsï¿½ staff to optimize Graduate Medical Education cost reimbursement.

In conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer of the facility, the Chief Executive Officer will sign to certify the financials of the facility on a quarterly basis.

CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum ten to fifteen years of progressive experience in facility or healthcare management, culminating in successfully leading a complex entity in a culturally diverse, competitive urban environment. Incumbent should possess the following experiences, professional and personal attributes and education:
A minimum of ten years of successful progressive healthcare/hospital management experience to include management experience in an academic medical center environment. A demonstrable record of significant career progression, having culminated in a senior management position as either a Chief Operating Officer, Senior Operations Officer or Chief Executive Officer in a progressive, financially sound hospital system.
Experience working in an academic medical center that utilizes cutting edge technologies, resources and therapies, with a focus on teaching future generations of medical professionals the best ways to care for their patients, is highly desirable.
Demonstrated, sophisticated understanding of healthcare and facility financial matters; a strong, experience-based knowledge of managed care.
Experience as a senior operational executive in a proprietary facility, or proven capability to consistently produce positive margins in a complex and competitive environment.
