Applications are invited for the position of Full-time and Locum Intensivists, Department of Medicine, at Unity Health Toronto, St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC). St. Joseph’s is a fully accredited community teaching hospital within the Unity Health Toronto network. Unity Health Toronto is Canada’s largest Catholic Academic Health Sciences System and is affiliated with the University of Toronto.
Employing approximately 2500 staff, along with 400 credentialed staff physicians serving approximately 400 beds, St. Joseph’s provides primary, secondary and selected tertiary services to the West Toronto region. Serving a culturally and economically diverse population of about 530,000, it has embraced the Unity Health values of Inclusivity, Community, Excellence, Compassion and Human Dignity.
The Intensive Care Program is a closed-access 20 bed high-acuity level 3 mixed medical/surgical Critical Care Unit, with plans to deploy five to ten level 2 beds in the near term. It supports a strong Department of Medicine and Surgery. There are approximately 100,000 ER visits annually and the ED is one of the busiest in the province and provides 24-hour a day emergency care
You would be joining a team of four Intensivists. Strong clinical programs in core surgical subspecialties, thoracic surgery, hepatobiliary surgery and a full complement of medical subspecialties, in turn, support the ICU. Our Critical Care Response Team (CCRT) is co-managed with our Internists.
SJHC is a teaching hospital with the ICU participating in the teaching of senior medical residents and critical care fellows. Currently, the intensivist covers a 7-day block, and needs to be available 24/7 with support from in-house internal medicine coverage overnight. The SJHC Intensive Care program is developing strong collaboration in quality improvement and quality assurance with our Network partners at St. Michael’s Hospital as a mandate of the Unity Health Toronto clinical services strategy. Indeed, it is an excellent time to join SJHC’s Intensive Care Program, a community hospital program within an academic health sciences network.
Candidates will hold certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in Critical Care Medicine or equivalent and will hold or be able to obtain an independent license to practice medicine with the CPSO. Remuneration is fee-for-service plus potential for stipends with our Critical Care Response Team.
