A virology research laboratory seeks an organized, motivated, detail-oriented research assistant with analytical thinking skills and a strong work ethic. In the Ogden Lab, we study mechanisms by which double-stranded RNA viruses of the Reoviridae family acquire genetic diversity and impacts of this diversity on virus and host populations. The current project focuses on reovirus, an enteric, neurotropic virus that infects many mammalian species, but causes disease only in newborn animals. This virus also is important due to its oncolytic properties. We want to characterize panels of antibodies that are directed against the reovirus attachment protein and may recognize specific structural conformations of this molecule.
Under moderate supervision, the research assistant will:
Provide experimental and technical support for ongoing research projects.
Perform experimental procedures, including PCR-based cloning, transfection, cell culture, virus purification, infectivity and growth assays, and ELISA.
Collect and analyze data from experimental procedures and discuss results with the principal investigator.
Document experimental results and maintain an organized laboratory notebook.
Assist in general laboratory operation, such as preparation of stock solutions and other reagents.
Assist with monitoring and stocking lab inventory, ordering supplies, and keeping track of laboratory expenditures.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including maintaining and repairing equipment, according to manufacturer and university guidelines.
Job requires a Bachelor's degree in the sciences and the equivalent of two years of research experience.
