Research Scientist (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) – Integrated Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program

Established to provide timely access to quality medical care to the State of California’s 35 adult correctional institutions and reentry programs California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) is seeking a research scientist well-versed in epidemiologic or biostatistical investigations to plan, organize, and direct major applied scientific studies to provide evidence-driven support of our newly-launched statewide Integrated Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program. This comprehensive program is designed to provide integrated, specialized care to patients with a history of substance abuse who require additional medical assistance.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
The design, implementation, and maintenance of surveillance systems for monitoring substance use disorder (SUD) and other complex/chronic conditions that may impact patient and organizational outcomes among CCHCS’ patient populations
Development of surveillance protocols, case definitions, and standardized surveillance systems
Development and implementation of data quality assurance protocols and the development of queries and reports using data analysis software
The planning, execution, and evaluation of strategies for using electronic data to monitor and characterize SUD-related outcomes, including those for post-incarceration patients
Applying statistical and survey techniques and biologic theory for the purpose of describing and understanding the distribution and determinants of SUD-related outcomes in our patient population, the role of the health care system, and the efficacy of public health, medical, and other interventions in modifying these influences
Travel to California correctional institutions one to two times per year for investigations
To thrive in this position, you must have:
A doctoral degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or medicine (MD or DO)
Minimum three years’ experience in the field of epidemiology and/or biostatistics, including major responsibility for the design, implementation, and analysis of complex research; or the administration and coordination of large, complex multidisciplinary, or multi-institutional research programs
Knowledge of public health principles and practices; and current public health scientific research literature and trends applicable to public health and the scientific research area
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with professional staff and officials of federal, state, local, and university organizations
Ability to provide persuasive and skilled leadership to other staff regarding research, principles, and methods
