The Vice President, Employment and Litigation Counsel, advises CHRISTUS executives and management staff System-wide on labor, employment, and employee benefit matters, as well as manages employment-related and general business claims and litigation.
This Counsel must have extensive knowledge and experience in areas of law relating to labor, employment, dispute resolution and litigation. Areas of required expertise include federal and state employment regulation and anti-discrimination laws; wage and hour laws; occupational injury; the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), including applicable exemptions; National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) rules and regulations; affirmative action rules and regulations; litigation; investigations; negotiation; and dispute resolution. This counsel must also have or develop strong working knowledge of labor and employment laws as they apply in nonprofit and healthcare settings. This includes but it not limited to clinical peer review involving employees, HIPAA privacy and security regulations, and experience with self-disclosures and responses to governmental investigations in connection with compliance issues relating to labor and employment matters.
The Vice President, Employment and Litigation Counsel, works collaboratively with Regional and System leaders throughout the CHRISTUS Health system, and with CHRISTUS Regional Counsel and other internal and external counsel. This Counsel serves as a resource for leaders across the CHRISTUS system on legal issues relating to labor, employment, employee benefits and general litigation, with the ability to effectively educate and train on a variety of topics, and develop and drive continuous improvement, including proactively developing solutions to systemic and recurrent issues in the Counsel's subject matter areas. This position requires the ability to effectively manage and coordinate with other internal attorneys, outside counsel and paralegals to achieve positive results.
Juris Doctor Degree.
Thorough knowledge of all health care related laws and regulations.
At least 10 years in a law firm or in-house setting practicing labor and employment law, and handling related and general commercial litigation, including at least 5 years of significant experience and responsibility for a broad range of legal matters arising employment law matters in connection with a mature human resources function.
Strong writing and analytical skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to keep abreast of relevant industry and related legal developments and reflect such knowledge in legal work product and advice.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
License to practice law in at least one state.
Ability to become licensed as in Texas (through waiver or otherwise) within 12 months after start date.
