Shift Information: Day Job
The Director Government Relations is responsible for all government relations activities to secure funding and favorable legislative provisions and rules to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities
Adds value as a key member of management; understands the business, financials, industry, customers and strategy.
Supervises employees, provides direction, coaches, trains and develops, and manages performance to company goals and expectations.
Prepares, manages, and adheres to department budget to maintain expenditure controls.
Work closely with Ohio Children’s Hospital Association (OCHA), Children’s Hospitals Association (CHA), and Ohio Hospital Association (OHA) on the planning, implementation and evaluation of government relations strategies and tactics, particularly in the areas of Medicaid and Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) funding.
Work closely with senior leadership, Women’s Board, Board of Trustees, medical staff, and other key staff to identify and develop government relations strategies, as well as institutional partnerships and coalitions.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with elected local, state and federal government officials and lobby on behalf of Akron Children’s.
Initiate, participate and represent Akron Children’s Hospital in collaborative programming that promotes community health improvement safety and education.
Identifies opportunities to engage legislative professionals in related efforts.

Education and Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Public Health, Political Science or Public Administration preferred. Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum of eight (8) years demonstrated leadership, management, administrative, and organizational skills
Minimum six (6) years of experience in congressional, state, and federal government relations advocacy, and/or policy required.
Minimum of three (3) years of direct supervisory experience required.
Excellent oral and written communication abilities with experience in public speaking necessary.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with a commitment to the population served by the hospital.
Strong analytical, problem solving and sound judgment skills.
Must also maintain knowledge of complex activities and operations of state, federal and local legislative bodies, as well as governmental and community agencies, that may impact funding and provisions to children’s hospitals and the population it serves.
Must be able to direct and evaluate effective legislative strategies; effectively advocate the children’s hospital agenda; build and maintain local, national and federal networks; and manage and direct numerous and various complex issues simultaneously.
Works with little direction and supervision, timely completion of projects, makes time for unplanned assignments, adapts to changing priorities.
Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required.
