The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is an educational, research, and scientific association of physicians organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve the care of the patient. Since its founding in 1905, ASA’s achievements have made it an important voice in American Medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain. Reporting to the ASA Chief Executive Officer and Chief Advocacy and Practice Officer, the Chief Quality Officer will establish and lead ASA’s Quality and Practice Advancement Division (Division). This includes economics and practice innovation, quality measurement, reporting and improvement, and research and analytic services. The Chief Quality Officer will ensure goals and initiatives are aligned within the Division, advance the strategic plan in the areas of quality, and practice advancement. In conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer and physician leaders, the Chief Quality Officer will help identify and groom future physician leaders in the areas of quality and economics. The Chief Quality Officer will also serve in coordination with ASA elected officials as a liaison to external organizations, including federal agencies and other specialty societies and standard setting organizations to represent the ASA in quality and economic related areas.
Additionally, the Chief Quality Officer will collaborate with the elected Vice President for Professional Affairs and support that individual’s work in overseeing committees and setting direction in the areas of advocacy, economics, practice, and standards. The Chief Quality Officer will develop and implement proposals, programs, and procedures as envisioned by the CEO, Executive Committee, Administrative Council and Board to ensure successful execution of approved plans.
The Chief Quality Officer will work closely with the Anesthesia Quality Institute (AQI), including the AQI Executive and AQI Board to establish and meet their vision and strategic goals. They will establish and maintain effective relationships with organizations and leaders in the medical, scientific, public health, patient safety, as well as federal regulatory agencies. The Chief Quality Officer will advise ASA communications staff on content of material related to quality, practice management, and related areas in the Division. The Chief Quality Officer will act as “Physician in Residence” for ASA staff members, serving as a resource to departments and providing education related to clinical issues, research, practice standards, and medical education.
Interested candidates should have an M.D. degree, board certification in Anesthesiology and be able to relocate to either Washington, DC or Schaumburg, IL.
