Our Infection Prevention Team consists of 5 adult inpatient Infection Preventionists, 2 pediatric Infection Preventionists, and a Hand Hygiene Program Coordinator. Our physician epidemiologists offer collaboration and clarification on infectious disease issues and the Infection Prevention Director serves to coordinates and facilitate team efforts directed at decreasing patient harm throughout the continuum of care.
We are seeking an experienced Infection Prevention professional for our outpatient setting. This infection preventionist will serve as a liaison and consultant to the ambulatory areas for infection prevention issues, including but not limited to safe injection practices, hand hygiene, environment of care concerns, and dialysis practice. The job duties also includes on-boarding new clinics, serving as the local expert for sterilization/disinfection issues, policy development, program implementation, surveillance for outpatient healthcare associated infections, and safety rounds aimed at reducing patient harm in the outpatient setting. Travel to off-site clinics is required. Certification in Infection Prevention after two years is expected.
Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Assist in planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating infection control and prevention activities through a collaborative role with the Infection Control and Prevention Coordinator and Hospital Epidemiologist as evidenced by the Infection Control Plan.
Collect, collate, analyze and trend data reporting results to Infection Control and Prevention Coordinator and Hospital Epidemiologist.
Identify infection clusters and outbreaks. Alert Infection Control and Prevention Coordinator and Hospital Epidemiologist of any clusters of infections and/or clusters of resistant organisms within one working day of discovery.
Report unit-specific data to unit boards and relevant committees.
Conduct special studies relevant to outbreak investigations and reports results to Infection Control and Prevention Coordinator
Analyze infection trends for assigned units or surgical procedures/services.
Coordinate infection prevention efforts with team members, nursing staff, attending physicians, and other departmental leaders, faculty, and staff.
Sit on dedicated task force and unit board subcommittees dedicated to infection prevention activities
Report infection rates and trends to relevant committees with action plans dedicated to infection prevention activities.
Develop a liaison role in public health disease reporting and emergency preparedness/emerging disease notification. Report communicable diseases as required by Tennessee State Law Chapter 1200-14-1 Notifiable Diseases to local and state health departments. Coordinated with state and local health department officials
Diseases requiring telephone reporting are reported within 4 hours of discovery.
Written reports (demographic patient data) are reported within 5 days of receiving lab results or medical record reports.
Design and deliver training and educational offerings relative to infection control staff/faculty, students, volunteers, patients and families.
Consult with customers to plan and support learning.
Apply adult learning principles.
Apply appropriate instructional strategies to optimize learning.
Work with managers, program coordinators, and others to develop materials.
Design and disseminate departmental/unit specific training to fit unit need as requested
Evaluate effectiveness of education and change educational strategy according to results.
Respond to customers needs with flexibility in schedule and teaching methods.
Work with Occupational Health Clinic (OHC) when a problem with communicable disease transmission is likely to have occurred within the staff/faculty population
Identify and coordinate solutions for continuous improvement of compliance with the Occupational Infectious Disease Prevention Program.
Notify OHC within one working day of communicable disease exposure
Findings of the exposure event are recorded in the Epidemic Alert (Epi-Alert) and reported to the Infection Control Committee
Participate in the Medical Center's efforts in meeting and maintaining regulatory compliance (JCAHO, OSHA, CMS, State DOH)
Participate in weekly Environment of Care (EOC) tours of units, departments and clinics
Staff/faculty compliance is monitored and suggestions for improvement offered on the EOC form or communicated directly to the unit/department/clinic manager

Collaborates within Infection Control Coordinator and Hospital epidemiologist to identify and develop innovative strategies that improve service, quality and productivity.
Recognizes, initiates, and manages change, utilizing established methods such as Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA). Utilizes change management to drive results.
Standards of Accountability
Ensures the delivery of quality patient care by holding staff accountable to patient care and regulatory standards. Interprets policies and procedures to faculty, staff, patients/families.
Responds promptly to patient, family, faculty, and staff concerns seeking to bring issues to resolution. Monitors satisfaction outcomes and coaches care team members as required.
Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) and 5 years' experience
Bachelor degree in either Microbiology, Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, or other Healthcare related field
Minimum of 5 years' experience in infection prevention; nursing, epidemiology, public health or related field may be substituted.
